The wines of Vesuvius known since Roman times for body and goodness are produced from vineyards located on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, which reflect the character and might.
Here grapes have a distinctive flavor and aroma.
The fame of this wonderful corner of the world and its wine has given origin to myths and legends like the one of "Lacrima Christi": "God recognized in the Gulf of Naples a strip of sky during the fall of Lucifer to the hell, he wept and where divine tears fell the
Lacrima Christi arose.
Another version tells of Christ visiting a hermit who redeemed before the leave-taking and therefore he transformed his bad tasting drink in excellent wine. Christian versions, inherited from pagan mythology, well established since the first human settlements as
shown by the fresco of Bacchus (god of wine) on Mount Vesuvius, discovered in the “House of Centenary” in Pompeii, and many other roman remains that survived the eruption in 79 AD, the oldest of which we have written testimony.
In order to offfer a better service we decided to add to our trips a "wine tasting tour" at the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, which starts with a visit to the most famous vineyards, some of which are listed below.
PIEDIROSSO
Palummina or locally known as' per e palummo
Piedirosso owes its name to the color that it takes on the spine and the gleanings with the approach of full maturation of the bunch. If the rest of the region the spread and the fame of Piedirosso is second just after the Aglianico, in the province of Naples and Mount
Vesuvius its the absolut protagonist. Piedirosso is a splendid and inimitable expression of acidity and minerality from the soil of the volcano, is extraordinarily rich in lime, phosphorus and potassium.
AGLIANICO
The last one to ripe on the slopes of Vesuvius, between the second half and the end of October, the Aglianico, is the noble prince of the black grapes of the south. Again, on this loose soil, sometimes sandy, the 'Aglianico shows its strength, the strength of tannins, the astringency that can dissolve well in the making of Lacryma Christi. Used pure in the IGT Pompeiano, it can give valuable products, mainly in a careful aging in wood and a more or less long raffinering in bottle. It has good tolerance to powdery mildew and also cryptogams in general.
OLIVELLA
locally known as Ulivella
The name of this black berry variety refers to the shape and reminds the olive in both form and purple colour. Long confused with the grape Sciascinoso, because of morphological similarity between the two varieties, as a result of the genetic-research Olivella was instead to be a variety in itself, among the oldest of Campania. It survived the devastation of phylloxera, it has good tolerance to the main fungal diseases and good resistance to adverse conditions. It has an early riping in the second half of October, it has good acidity and low sugar content, which is why they do not develop high levels of alcohol and is mainly used in blends.
CODA DI VOLPE DEL VESUVIO
locally known as Caprettone crapettone (beard)
Variety issued exclusively in the common places on the slopes of Vesuvius, where it represent the main vine of the white doc Vesuvius, an essential component that is exclusive to the second assembly with other white grapes, or just pure itself. The
Caprettone, in the past, has been confused with the coda di volpe bianca (white fox tail), from which it differs, however, for many morphological characters. As it often happens with the varieties that reminds names of animals, even in this case the name of the
grape is probably referring to the shape of the cluster, similar to the goat's beard, or pastors who undertook the cultivation.
Besides visiting the vineyards, the tour gives our customers the opportunity to have lunch in a farmhouse situated in the vineyard approaching the food with the right quality of wine to have the highest expression.
